Curlers Fling Rocks

As pointed out in this space a couple of weeks ago, curling action in now winding down. However, that means some top-notch entertainment as the season nears its end.

Last weekend, fans of the sport may have been watching Canada’s Jennifer Jones on television as she took part at the women’s world curling championships in Saskatchewan. Others may have taken a trip down to Esquimalt where some big name teams competed at the Victoria Curling Classic.

For Jones, the weekend ended with a bronze medal at the worlds, as her Winnipeg foursome downed Sweden 9-6 in the consolation final. The gold went to the German team skipped by veteran Andrea Schoepp, who previously won a world title back in 1988. Schoepp got past young Scottish skip Eve Muirhead 8-6 in an extra end. Now come the men’s world championships, beginning today in Italy where Canada is being represented by Brier winner Kevin Koe and his Alberta squad.

As for the invitational event down Island last weekend, Olympic champion Kevin Martin emerged the winner. Martin’s team from Edmonton defeated Wayne Middaugh 2-1 in the men’s final, while Calgary’s Shannon Kleibrink won the women’s final 7-3 over Edmonton’s Cathy King.

Locally, the annual Spring Fling Mixed held last weekend marked the final bonspiel of the year at the Nanaimo Curling Club. George Duffell and his committee organized the event, which involved a total of 32 teams.

Finals in the four events of the spiel were held on Sunday afternoon and the championship game in A event, sponsored by Johnston Franklin Lawyers, was especially exciting. Tied 6-6 after eight ends, a single point in the extra end gave Cowichan’s Rod Challborn a 7-6 victory over the Nanaimo team skipped by Steve Anderson. Others on the Anderson team were third Brenda Redman, second Kelbin Kedves and lead Shannon Donaldson.

Third in A were Nanaimo’s Dave McGarry and his teammates Kalia Van Osch, Hugh Bathgate and Talya Jesperson.

Winners of the Christensen B event were Glen Cheetham and his Port Alberni team. Cheetham overcame a first-end 5-0 deficit to post an 11-9 win against the Nanaimo team of Colleen World, Kevin Weinreich, Ed Van Osch and Cindy Van Osch. Third went to local skip Ken Hall and his squad of Joan Hall, Bob Buchanan and Heather Buchanan.

Sponsor for the C event was the Mortgage Centre. In the all-Nanaimo final, skip Garry Smith came away with an 8-3 win against the George Duffell foursome. With Smith were third Dianne Smith, second Rick Ringma and lead Sharon Ringma. Teammates with Duffell were Sally Noonan, Doug Martin and Noreen Martin.

In the D event, sponsored by Bastion Trophies, teams consisted of a pair of experienced curlers together with a pair of novices. Eight groups were involved and first place went to Barry Hore, Ann Marie Hore, Jesse Hore and Emily Huchford.

Runners-up in the novice event were skip Kevin Franklin along with Dallyce Gillespie, Ed Zwart and Janice Banser. Capturing third spot was Bob Hungar and his teammates Karen Hungar, Brian McRory and Patty McRory.

Whatever your sport, a reminder in closing to play your hardest, play fair and show good sportsmanship.
